Silk fabric was first developed in ancient China, with some of the earliest good examples found as early as 3500 BC. Legend gives credit to get developing silk to a Chinese empress, Leizu. Silks were originally reserved to get the Emperors of China for their own use and gifts to others, but spread gradually via Chinese culture and industry both geographically and socially, and to many areas of Asia. Silk rapidly became a popular extravagance fabric in the numerous areas accessible to Chinese merchants because of its texture and lustre. Silk was in great need, and became a staple of pre-industrial international industry.
