    Damask was first produced in China, India, Persia, and Syria, then a Byzantine Empire followed. In the West, it was first called diaspron or diaper, the word used in Constantinople. In the 12th century however , the location of Damascus, famous for its textiles and center for the trade of fabrics involving the East and the West, up to now outstripped all other places for beauty of design that it gave the magazine its modern name. This fabric is believed to be one of the first elegant fabrics of the Renaissance. They used it seeing that vestments (garments or ceremonial robes). In Rome, damask was imported by the Crusaders from Damascus.

    Damask is really a type of textile closely associated with curtains, tablecloths, cloth wallpapering, and upholstery. It has also historically been used to make jackets and other heavy outer clothes. Classical damask is made from silk, although the term is now widely used to refer to the style of weaving, regardless as to the material used. The textile is characterized by a background of lustrous fabric against which raised designs appear. Several pieces of antique upholstered furniture are covered within this fabric, which is how many consumers become acquainted with it.
